Looking To The Cross | Day 4 | Matthew 26:26-29

The Passover meal was one that all of the disciples of Jesus were familiar.

They had partaken of it since they were babes and now, they sat in an upper room with the one they believed was the Messiah. This time it was different though. Jesus was transforming this meal that was meant to commemorate the Exodus from Egypt into a meal that was about him.

The cup was now a representation of His blood.

The bread was now a representation of His body.

This was earth shattering and paradigm shifting to these men. I can imagine the bewildered looks and contemplative stares that accompanied Jesus’ explanation of the meal.

Jesus knew though that it would all make sense after the cross. It was the cross that made the fulfillment of this new covenant into a reality. I would have loved to have been in the room with these same disciples the first time they partook of this meal again after the cross and after the resurrection.

Bewilderment replaced with wonder; contemplation usurped by joy. Maybe you find yourself observing the Lord’s Supper at church in a similar way the first disciples did before the cross.

Maybe you’ve grown up with the cup and the bread and hearing Jesus’ words from the Gospels or 1 Corinthians, but you’ve lost that wonder.

The only way we can recapture it is by understanding that the blood of Jesus was “poured out for the many for the forgiveness of sins”. We may be 2,000 years removed from these events, but we still can share in the wonder and joy of the Lord’s Supper every time we remember the cross.
