Looking To The Cross | Day 2 | Isaiah 53:1-12

This is one of the greatest Old Testament passages of Scripture that points to and predicts the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Written some 700 years before the actual events of Jesus’ death and sacrifice, it’s amazing to see God speak through His prophet, Isaiah, to point to the fulfillment of His salvific plan for the world.

There is so much in this chapter, but it’s important to notice all the actions done to our Lord: despised, rejected, esteemed not, smitten, afflicted, pierced, crushed, oppressed, and cut off. Each of those words represents a depth of human emotion and experience that none of us can fully comprehend.

These words represent the suffering that Jesus willingly chose. But he was not passive. Look at the actions that Jesus did: borne our sorrows, carried our griefs, opened not his mouth, makes an offering for guilt, made many to be accounted righteous, bared their iniquities, makes intercession.

Again, we see the purpose and the fulfillment of Jesus’ death on the cross.

I think it’s vital for us to see all that was done to Jesus, and at the same time all that Jesus did. He was a like a lamb led to the slaughter, and yet in complete control. Humility and authority. Suffering and Power. The cross is like no other event in human history where the fulness of God’s attributes is on display. Let us reflect today on all that was done to Jesus and all that Jesus did for our sins.
