Looking To The Cross | Day 1 | Genesis 3:15

You might be wondering why the first devotional in our 40 Days of Looking to the Cross includes a passage of Scripture with no mention of the cross.

It’s important to know that this is the first verse in Bible that alludes to the cross of Jesus Christ. Theologians call it the “Proto Evangelium”, or in other words, it’s the first time we see in Scripture God’s plan for salvation for mankind.

This verse is part of the curse that God gives to the serpent (Satan) after the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. God rightly claims that the seed of the woman (Jesus) will one day bruise the head of the serpent, and overcome this sentence of death, but it will cost this future Savior.

The serpent will bruise his heel. This bruising alludes to the cross. There is pain and suffering, and even death, that Jesus will suffer to crush the head of the serpent. It should bring us great comfort that the cross was not a made-up plan on the fly, reacting to humanity’s sin. Instead, we believe that God, in His infinite sovereignty, planned from the very beginning to overcome our sin even at a great cost to Him.

What love! What wisdom! What power! As we begin our 40 day’s journey, let us reflect on God’s goodness from the very beginning.
