Shaken World…Unshaken Trust

In what or whom do you trust?

Take a moment and truly consider it.

In what or whom do you trust?

I can remember feeling safe in my home as a child. Knowing I would be loved, fed, dressed, kept safe from harm led me to develop trust in my parents. And, not knowing a lot about grown-up life, I trusted most adults without hesitation. Grownups represented stability and the assurance that they knew what was best for me and would provide for my every need.

But, as the years passed, and I became one of those “grownups” myself, the layers of reality gradually peeled back and exposed unsafe, unsettling areas. Could I trust the neighbor across the hall? Could I believe that my boss truly had my back and was looking out for my best interests? On whom could I truly rely? So many questions…so much doubt. Naive trust soon transferred to insecurity and fear.

Flash-forward to 2022. It is clear we cannot trust many people, especially (sadly) those in positions of authority. We cannot trust our government or business leaders. We cannot trust the media. We should not trust technology and we even have to be discerning about trusting our church leaders. So much corruption, deceit, not to mention a blatant turning away from God. To quote Charles Spurgeon, “Whatever a man depends upon, whatever rules his mind, whatever governs his affections, whatever is the chief object of his delight, is his god.” Trusting in any human is like walking on thin ice.

Our world today is a dark place where fear can gain strength moment by moment. It’s almost as if the more we know the less we trust.

But that’s not the way it is with God.

Proverbs 29:25 tells us, “The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.”

The greater our knowledge of who God is, what His Word tells us about His character, His power, His love, the more we can trust Him. The closer we become to the Lord through time spent with Him offers us a relationship unlike any other. A trust in the highest authority figure who knows us, guides us, shields us and comforts us is something that no earthly relationship can ever provide.

As followers of Jesus, we know there is a spiritual battle happening. The evil one desires nothing more than for Christians to be frozen by fear. He loves when our trust in God is weak. And it seems he is winning as current polls show a tremendous lack of dedicated believers. The boldness of evil keeps progressing. The darkness keeps getting darker. World leaders have shunned God and act as though they are the ones in control of everything. Each “king” is setting up kingdoms for their own power and glory.

But, there is deliverance for God’s people! Our hope is in HIM! The Creator of life…the Most Holy Lord…the Alpha and Omega…the King of all kings!!! Our complete trust can be placed in the Father and in his promises. He WILL return! He WILL establish His kingdom for us! Hallelujah!!!

During this Christmas season, lean into the powerful lyrics of the Hallelujah Chorus and be reminded of this:

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth!
Hallelujah!

The kingdom of this world is become
The kingdom of our Lord
And of His Christ
And of His Christ

And He shall reign forever and ever
King of kings (Forever and ever hallelujah hallelujah)
And Lord of lords (Forever and ever hallelujah hallelujah)

And HE shall reign forever and ever!
King of Kings, and Lord of Lords!

From a tiny baby in a lowly manger to our everlasting Savior…He is Emmanual…God with us! He will never leave us, never forsake us. Our trust in Him can be complete and total. We require nothing else.

We have the sure promise of God, that He is going to make everything right, in His own timing. He will. We can fully trust in Him.
