Looking To The Cross | Day 11 | Luke 24:25-27

Seven miles lie between Emmaus and Jerusalem, and it takes on average two hours to walk those seven miles.

Two men began a journey on the road to Emmaus troubled and sad, confused by the women’s report that Jesus’ tomb was empty.  Jesus, concealing His identity, joined the men as they traveled. Imagine their surprise when He entered the conversation, and in less than two hours, reached back to the time of Moses and interpreted all the Scriptures regarding the suffering that resulted in His rising to glory.

Jesus had the undivided attention of His companions and a good stretch of time in which to teach them.  This is the embodiment of Deuteronomy 6:7-9 which instructs the Israelites to take advantage of every opportunity to teach the Scriptures to their children. They were to capitalize on the everyday moments of sitting at home, walking along the road, going to bed and waking in the morning.

Jesus takes the same approach with us. He uses everyday moments as teachable moments. But do we provide Him opportunities like the walk to Emmaus? Do we offer our undivided attention over a two-hour period of time? Or any length of time for that matter? How incredible is it that the Lord Himself was able to connect the prophesies and fulfillment that had just occurred? He could teach because they were teachable.

It is the same today. Jesus quite literally walks with us on the path of life, demonstrating His vast knowledge, gently rebuking our doubts, and guiding our hearts towards truth. Praise be to God, the Wonderful Counselor!
